I Blue Öyster Cult si formano nel 1967 allo Stony Brook College di Long Island dall’incontro tra gli studenti Sandy Pearlman, Richard Meltzer (che scrive le canzoni), Andy Winters (basso), Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser (chitarra), John Wiesenthal —poi sostituito con Allen Lanier — (tastiere) e Albert Bouchard (batteria).
