Yes: esce super deluxe edition di "Tales From Topographic Oceans"

Il sesto album degli Yes, pubblicato nel dicembre del 1973, "Tales From Topographic Oceans", sarà oggetto di una edizione super deluxe composta da 12 CD più un Blu-ray che uscirà il 6 febbraio 2026 per Rhino Records. Il cofanetto include una versione rimasterizzata dell'album originale sia su CD che su vinile; rarità; registrazioni in studio e dal vivo inedite; e diversi nuovi mix di Steven Wilson, inclusa una versione Dolby Atmos.

Il doppio album "Tales From Topographic Oceans" giunse in un periodo artisticamente florido per la band inglese. Nell'anno e mezzo precedente il gruppo aveva pubblicato ben tre album: "The Yes Album" e "Fragile" nel 1971 e "Close To the Edge" ( leggi qui la recensione ) nel 1972.

Nel comunicato stampa viene riportato: "Le origini di "Tales From Topographic Oceans" risalgono a una nota a piè di pagina di 'Autobiografia di uno Yogi' di Paramahansa Yogananda, che ispirò Jon Anderson a immaginare un viaggio musicale in quattro parti attraverso le antiche scritture indù. Quel concetto prese forma in quattro composizioni, una per lato: "The Revealing Science Of God (Dance of the Dawn)", "The Remembering (High the Memory)", "The Ancient (Giants Under the Sun)" e "Ritual (Nous Sommes Du Soleil)"".

In un'intervista del 2019, Jon Anderson , parlando del disco a Best Classic Bands, dichiarò: "Quando andammo in Giappone iniziai a pensare: 'Ok, l'FM in America sta prendendo piede. Quindi possiamo fare pezzi lunghi. Le porte si stanno aprendo. Facciamo quattro pezzi da 20 minuti'. E lo abbiamo fatto."

Per realizzare l'album Jon Anderson (voce), Steve Howe (chitarra), Chris Squire (basso), Rick Wakeman (tastiere) e Alan White (batteria) lavorarono con il produttore Eddy Offord ai Morgan Studios di Londra, utilizzando la prima console a 24 tracce della Gran Bretagna. "Tales from Topographic Oceans" raggiunse la vetta della classifica degli album nel Regno Unito e il sesto posto negli Stati Uniti.

L'edizione Super Deluxe svela dimensioni più profonde del progetto con versioni inedite e in progress di tutti e quattro i brani dell'album. Il materiale live del cofanetto venne registrato all'inizio del tour di 'Tales' e include performance inedite di tutti e quattro i brani dell'album. I concerti si tennero a Zurigo (21 aprile 1974), Manchester (28 novembre 1973) e Cardiff (1 dicembre 1973).

Syd Schwartz di Jazz & Coffee nelle note di copertina del cofanetto riporta: "Il consenso non è mai stato il punto. "Tales From Topographic Oceans" continuerà a essere dibattuto, respinto, difeso e riscoperto. La sua resistenza a facili categorizzazioni non è un fallimento: è la ragione per cui dura. È un vasto e inconoscibile oceano di suono e spirito. E non ha ancora finito di rivelarsi".

E continua ancora scrivendo: "Senza 'Tales', non ci sarebbe "Relayer" (il successivo album degli Yes pubblicato nel 1974, ndr). Nessun passaggio a strutture più snelle e nette alla fine degli anni '70. Nessuna mappa viene tracciata senza prima spingersi oltre i confini del mondo conosciuto, e 'Tales' è dove gli Yes hanno fatto esattamente questo".
