Take the guitar player for a ride: due parole su Peter Laughner e "Amphetamine"

Questa è una breve introduzione (o tentativo di farne una) ad "Amphetamine", brano dell'oscuro menestrello Peter Laughner - una delle hit più cupe e underground in circolazione

Immaginate un mondo in cui Dylan si è fatto uno speedball in compagnia di Lou Reed e sogna di suonare con gli Stones e i Television. Ma non disdegna scorribande nel blues sepolcrale e nel cantautorato folk più acustico e minimale. Questo fu Peter Laughner, musicista e giornalista di Cleveland, morto neppure venticinquenne nel 1977, con assidue frequentazioni del giro Dead Boys/Rocket From The Tombs/Pere Ubu. Nonché nemico amatissimo di Lester Bangs. Siamo in presenza di una di quelle leggende iperuraniche, uno di quei personaggi che hanno sfiorato il pianeta Terra e nessuno ricorda o quasi, nonostante abbiano lasciato frammenti sublimi.

Se non ci fosse stato lui probabilmente nessuno avrebbe mai ascoltato Rocket From The Tombs, Pere Ubu e Dead Boys. Notoriamente, in effetti, circa tre quarti dei pezzi dei Dead Boys sono riciclaggi di brani di Laughner (magari co-scritti con Gene O’Connor alias Cheetah Chrome), compresa quella “Ain’t It Fun” che coverizzarono anche i Guns N' Roses. Questa è la sua canzone più famosa, quella che - beffardamente - è giunta al grande pubblico (anche se percepita come una cover dei Dead Boys appunto), ma il suo top, il suo apice artistico, rimane "Amphetamine".

Questo brano, pesantemente influenzato dalle atmosfere maudit dei primi Velvet Underground, ma con inoculata una dose di blues minimale e folk aggressivo-passivo, è in pratica la "Heroin" di Laughner. Il pezzo-manifesto, la dichiarazione d'intenti suprema. L'arte che riflette la vita che si rifà all'arte.

Non esiste una versione davvero ufficiale della canzone, ma Laughner l'ha suonata con diverse formazioni - e da solista. Se ne trovano più di frequente alcune versioni live (soprattutto dei Rocket From The tombs) e qualche demo (sempre coi Rocket), oltre a diverse altre versioni con colleghi e musicisti cangianti: le atmosfere cambiano - da più rock a più intimiste - ma probabilmente la "Amphetamine" più toccante ed evocativa resta quella registrata nel 1976 ad Ann Harbor con l'aiuto di Don Harley all'organo.

Di certo non è il caso di accanirsi nell'imporre al mondo il ricordo o la riscoperta di Laughner. Ma sono certo che a nessuno farà male - anzi - ascoltare "Amphetamine". Anche senza sapere nulla di Peter. Poi i più curiosi possono anche leggere le parole e immergersi nel mondo di una frase come "Take the guitar player for a ride / Never in his life been satisfied / Thinks he owes some kind of debt / Just can't seem to get over it".
