Memphis/Tennessee, cradle of rock and roll, a never-ending list of the cream of the crop: MUDDY WATERS, HOWLIN’ WOLF; ELVIS and Sun Records; CHARLIE FEATHERS; the Southern Soul of the legendary Stax label; SAM THE SHAM & THE AND THE PHARAOHS; JAMES LUTHER DICKINSON or Alex CHILTON - just to name a few – they all shaped the face of this musical city. Their legacy is honoured by the likes of the OBLIVIANS, REIGNING SOUNDS; COMPULSIVE GAMBLERSand of course VIVA L’AMERICAN DEATH RAY MUSIC. VIVA L'AMERICAN DEATH RAY MUSIC is a revolting group of artists and musicians under the direction of NICHOLAS RAY, yielding a non-linear mode of themes and styles from project to project. Last years release, Smash Radio Hits (Sympathy For The Record Industry/ Misprint), evokes an AM radio friendly, grandiose rock and roll style. A style that implicates ROXY MUSIC excess contrasted by a concise mid 70's punk/ new wave dichotomy. But it is the record's final numbers that shed light on the band's direction to come. Which brings us to VIVA L’AMERICAN DEATH RAY MUSIC 's latest release: a new commotion, a different tension, which strips the line up down to a performing three-piece. The CD reveals a next wave/ pop aesthetic ("the new wave", "sycophant") coupled with a more subversive artrock attack ("oh! libertine", "any given hour"). VIVA L’AMERICAN DEATH RAY MUSIC absorbs its influences without hesitation, creating an urgent call of both irreverence and salutation. The band has already changed it's name several times after forming in the year 2000 in “Bluff City”. Even the members were fluctuating quite often. When the first album "Welcome To The Incredibly Strange And Erotic World Of The American Death Ray" came out, they simply called themselves THE AMERICAN DEATH RAY. On the second 7”inch “Hip Hugger Suit(e)”, that came out on Misprint Records, the name was AMERICAN DEATH RAY MUSIC. For the second album “Smash Radio Hits”, that was also published by Misprint and Sympathy For The Record Industry resp., the name finally mutated into VIVA L’AMERICAN DEATH RAY MUSIC. The only steady member of the band is it's founder NICK DIABOLO RAY. He is also the guitar player of MONSIEUR JEFFREY EVANS ’68 COMEBACK.The other band members were recruited from a variegated group of musicians, that used to play with COMPULSIVE GAMBLERS; THE LOST SOUNDS, THE RETARDS, ANDRE WILLIAMS and also TAV FALCO & HIS PANTHER BURNS. Currently NICHOLAS RAY (guitar, vocals) is joined in the studio and on the road with long time collaborator, composer and artist HARLAN T. BOBO (bass) and also with former percussionist for the POLYPHONIC SPREE, JEFFREY BOUCK. This outfit provides an electrifying live show that balances the learned with the improvisational from show to show
