L'occasione erano i festeggiamenti per il compleanno di Bob Benjamin, in nome del quale è organizzato ogni anno il concerto Light of the Day. E fra i 18 artisti convenuti sul palco sabato 17 gennaio, davanti a 1600 spettatori, c'era anche il Boss (come poteva mancare, ad Asbury Park?).
Per undici volte Bruce Springteen ha preso parte al concerto benefico a favore della Light of Day Foundation, ideato a sostegno di Benjamin, manager di lungo corso che nel 1996 si è ammalato del morbo di Parkinson.
Springsteen, che nel pomeriggio aveva fatto un soundcheck (la sua presenza, dunque, non era esattamente un segreto: chi aveva assistito al check se lo aspettava ampiamente), è salito sul palco intorno alle 22 raggiungendo Willie Nile e unendosi poi agli altri artisti previsti.
