Il Bmi Icon Award, premio della Broadcast Music Inc col quale si rende onore ai compositori che hanno avuto "influenza unica e indelebile su generazioni di music makers", è stato assegnato a John Lydon. Il quale, come nto, è personaggio spigoloso che disdegna tutte le occasioni ufficiali; si ricorderà forse di quando, nel 2006, a nome dei Sex Pistols rifiutò con sdegno l'inclusione nella Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Ma stavolta il Johnny Rotten dei Pistols non solo ha accettato, ma si è anche recato presso il prestigioso albergo Dorchester di Londra per ritirare il premio. Del Bryant, presidente della Bmi, ha definito il vecchio iconoclasta punk "una vera icona la cui influenza sulla musica, sulla moda e sull'arte si è fatta sentire in tutto il mondo". Poco prima della premiazione John aveva chiacchierato con "Rolling Stone" al quale aveva riferito che il premio della Bmi "è leggermente più serio di quella cosa della Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" e "è interessante che sia l'industria musicale britannica che dica 'ben fatto, John'. Credo d'aver fatto parecchio per questo Paese, quindi è carino che la cosa venga notata". Lydon ha aggiunto che non c'è alcuna reunion dei Pistols in vista.
