"Green", nonostante fosse già il loro sesto album, fu il primo disco a far conoscere i R.E.M. anche al pubblico non specializzato. Prima prova del quartetto di Athens per la Warner Bros, "Green" vide Michael Stipe e soci sterzare da un sound molto chitarristico per andare verso un approccio acustico che sarebbe discograficamente durato per qualche anno. Dall'LP del novembre 1988 furono estratti quattro singoli, "Orange crush", "Stand", "Pop song 89" e "Get up". Per festeggiare i 25 anni dalla pubblicazione, l'etichetta Rhino ha deciso di far uscire una ristampa deluxe, su due CD, di "Green"; oltre al disc originale, il secondo propone il concerto del 10 novembre 1989 a Greensboro, North Carolina. Nella ripubblicazione, intitolata semplicemente "Green: 25th Anniversary Deluxe Edition", trovano posto anche quattro cartoline ed un poster. Il tracklisting:
