A distanza di tre anni da “Heart & soul”, torna con un nuovo album in studio Joe Cocker. “Hymn for my soul” è stato registrato con l’ausilio del produttore Ethan Johns (già collaboratore di Emmylou Harris, Ryan Adams e Razorlight) e suonato con musicisti del calibro di Jim Keltner e James Gadson alla batteria, Benmont Tench al piano, Dave Palmer alle tastiere, Bob Babbit dei Funk Brothers al basso e Mike Finnigan all'organo.
In questo nuovo capitolo il cantante inglese rilegge, con la sua inconfondile voce, classici di artisti come Bob Dylan (“Ring them bells”), Solomon Burke, Art Neville and the Meters, George Harrison (“Beware of darkness”), Stevie Wonder (“You haven’t done nothin’), John Fogerty (“Long as I see the light”) e Andy Fairweather Low (title-track).
