Nonostante la critica musicale statunitense e britannica li abbia già incasellati in una ipotetica nuova scena newyorchese, i singoli componenti dei Liars provengono da diversi paesi: Angus Andrew (voce ed effetti) è australiano, Aaron Hemphill (chitarra e drum machine) è nato a Los Angeles, mentre Pat Nature (basso e sintetizzatore) e Ron Albertson (batteria) provengono dal Nebraska.
La musica contenuta nel loro album d’esordio, “They threw us all in a trench and stuck a monument on top”, è stata descritta come un mix tra il punk e la musica dance. I quattro in studio sono stati affiancati da Ste Revitte, già collaboratore di Beatie Boys, Money Mark e Lee “Scratch” Perry.
