Herbert Jansch (3 novembre 1943), scozzese, fu tra i fondatori dei Pentangle ed ha debuttato discograficamente nel 1965. A metà anni Sessanta, dopo essersi trasferito a Londra, suonò spesso con un altro maestro della chitarra, John Renbourn; i due pubblicarono anche un album comune nel 1967. I Pentangle durarono dal 1968 al 1973; Jansch si ritirò per due anni in Galles, uscendo dal "giro", ma poi tornò alla musica. Lo scorso 5 giugno l'artista ha ricevuto il riconoscimento "Merit" ai premi della rivista britannica "Mojo".
Il nuovo "The black swan" è stato prodotto da Noah Georgeson. Sul mercato nordamericano apparirà anche una versione in vinile.
