We'll be honest, when we first learned that Rihanna was going to make her acting debut in the upcoming flick "Battleship" (based off the board game), we were pretty surprised. We love Rihanna as a singer, but as an actress? Really? Of course, we probably shouldn't be too shocked. After all, It's not uncommon for musicians to make the big-screen leap. In fact, many pop-tarts have paved the way for Rihanna (although, not always successfully!). After the jump, check out our list of singers who made Hollywood debuts and find out ones which one proved their big screen worth and which ones totally bombed. 1. Taylor Swift in "Valentines Day" Taylor made her acting debut in the ensemble movie "Valentines Day" back in February, where she played a teenage girl madly in love with her boyfriend (played by Taylor Lautner -- her actual boyfriend at the time...awkward!). We thought Taylor did a decent job (although it's not like the role was a major stretch), and we actually found ourselves laughing at some of her on-screen antics. Still, we would need to see her take on a role outside of her comfort zone before deciding whether she's got what it takes to be a movie star. 2. Beyonce in "Austin Powers in Goldmember" Frankly, we didn't think B had much potential for an acting career after watching her in the made-for-TV movie "Carmen: A Hip Hopera" or for that matter, her sidekick role in "Austin Powers in Goldmember," but the girl persevered and eventually proved us wrong with projects like "Dreamgirls." Not only did she rock the vocals for the movie, but she also gave a heartfelt performance, which totally won us over. 3. Mariah Carey in "Glitter"/"The Bachelor" Technically, Mariah's first movie role was in "The Bachelor" (she had a small part), but it was "Glitter" that had everyone talking — and not in a good way. We were sure the movie, which totally bombed, was the end of Mariah's movie career. Yet somehow, years later (after a slew of minor roles), she managed to come back with a part in "Precious." Mariah gave a performance that convinced us she's got what it takes. Now we're wondering, what's next? 4. Britney Spears in "Crossroads" Let's put it this way, Britney may be one of the biggest pop-stars around, but when it came to signing up for "Crossroads," she definitely took the wrong road. Seriously, this movie (which was actually penned by Shonda Rhimes — aka the woman behind Grey's Anatomy!), about three friends who take a cross-country trip, was beyond forgettable. No wonder it was Brit's first and last movie. Of course, while her big screen debut may have been a total fail, she later landed roles on small-screen sitcoms, like "How I Met Your Mother"...and you know what? She was actually funny. Guess there's hope for her after all. (CLICK ON ANY OF THE IMAGES ABOVE TO SEE OUR FULL "FIRST MOVIE ROLES FOR POP-STARS" PHOTO GALLERY!) Do you think Rihanna's acting debut will be successful? Why or why not?
